The variation on yoga, which is done floating on stand-up paddleboards anchored in shallow water, has been popular over the past few years around the world.

Local yoga instructor Jo Flynn recently got her qualifications in Bali and is now leading groups of eight in hour-long classes on paddleboards - and occasionally off them - in Lake Burley Griffin.

"It's a really good laugh, and it's a super good workout for the core," said Flynn.

"So it's like your normal yoga workout, but it's just it helps you stay a little bit more present, and it just presents more of a physical challenge versus just your normal yoga class."

For those less than enthused about coming in direct contact with Lake Burley Griffin, the class stays pretty close to the shore, in hip-height water, and Flynn said the water, "really isn't as bad as you think".

The classes are held at Molonglo Reach, and you get into the water at the sand - so if you pretend really hard, you could almost imagine you're at the beach.

Flynn said you don't need to have done yoga or stand-up paddleboarding before - just wear activewear you don't mind getting wet, and take a towel and a change of clothes.

"And no valuables unless you want to donate it to the bottom of the lake," she laughs.

And if the threat of falling in the lake is a bit much for you, Flynn has also started beginners yoga classes. They're held in the open air, overlooking the lake from a safe and dry distance at the Aviary Rooftop bar at Westside Acton Park.
