Amber Nichols and husband Pete on Friday brought home to Franklin their beautiful newborn – Olive Eva – who was born at John James Hospital last Sunday, Father's Day.

It's been a whirlwind few months for 32-year-old Amber, not least in the last fortnight as she sang at The Voice finale in Sydney on August 30 and then a week later gave birth to her second child in Canberra.

Olive weighed 3.55 kilos and was 53cm long and is a little sister to brother, 17-month-old Charlie. Pete picked the name Olive. Big brother Charlie is still weighing up the new addition to the family, who has found her own voice and is not afraid to use it.

"Charlie is kind of like, 'What is that thing?'," Amber said. "He was okay until we brought her home and now he realises he's been dethroned."

The Telstra executive was still trying to digest her time on the singing competition in which she made the top five and won a legion of new fans.

"It's kind of like, 'Did that all just happen?'," she said, with a laugh.

"When people come up to you and ask, 'Were you on The Voice?', I realise, yes, it did happen. In Sydney doing the show you were kind of separated from your everyday life so it didn't feel real."

Amber admitted she was disappointed she didn't go further in the competition but realised during the group performance at the finale that it was probably a good thing she was eliminated because the pregnancy was taking its toll.

"Even though it was only, like, 20 seconds, I could not sing," she said. "I pretty much had to mime the whole way through – walking and singing, it was just too much.

"I just loved it, though, and wanted to go as far as possible. Part of me wished I wasn't pregnant going into the competition but part of me is so thankful because it made my experience so unique."

Amber is looking forward to performing her own music to her fans and has a show at the National Arboretum Canberra on October 30 with Lucy Sugerman and at The Abbey at Gold Creek with friend and fellow performer Hayley Jensen.

It's then they will be able to hear the music Amber has made and wants to continue to make.

"[Singing covers] is not the same as something that is from your heart and your soul and that are your own words," she said.

"That's what we all want to get out of it, the chance to show people what we actually do."

She will be on maternity leave for a year so "that gives me plenty of time to work out what I want to do with my music and spend time with the family – and work out how ro raise two kids under two!"
