The $80,000 raised will help Red Nose to save the lives of babies and children and support families who have been impacted by the death of a child, throughout the Canberra region.

The former ACT SIDS and Kids is now under the national umbrella of Red Nose but the money raised in Canberra will stay in Canberra, Red Nose chief executive officer Theron Vassiliou said.

"The funds will go straight back into the ACT community by way of Red Nose services on the ground here; safe sleeping educators, counsellors and parent support staff and, of course, contribution to the sort of clinical research Red Nose has become renowned for," he said.

"We currently spend around $750,000 specifically in the ACT. On staff working on programs, providing education, support services to parents and other services.

"We do aspire to deliver more services in Canberra over the coming year, particularly in education to parents and carers as well as to many of the progressive workplaces that exist here."

The $80,000 donation is the result of 12 months' fundraising by the Vikings Group which chose Red Nose as its charity of the year.

The Vikings Group and their dedicated staff ran a range of fundraising events, including a kick-starter $12,000 donation, Vikings Red Nose Dollar Ball, Tuggeranong Netball Club Turns Pink and game day donations throughout the rugby season.

Vikings CEO Anthony Hill said Red Nose was a great choice for its first Charity of the Year program.

"It's been a successful year and we're proud to have reached our fundraising goal. It's been a pleasure working alongside Red Nose," he said.

"We've had overwhelming support and generous donations from the Canberra community, which will definitely make a difference in the lives of families."

This is the first year Vikings Group has implemented the Charity of the Year program, which aims to support local charities by fundraising and raise awareness of their programs.

"Red Nose was an easy choice for our charity of the year, it provides much needed safe sleeping education and grief and loss services and support groups", Mr Hill said.

Mr Vassiliou said the Vikings Group was "a true leader in the ACT community".

"In many respects, our two organisations have similar parallels; grass roots community organisations that have been around for around 40 years, working diligently for our respective causes," he said.

Red Nose local spokeswoman, Lisa Ridgley said $80,000 would go a long way.

"If we were to create a shopping list we could pay for 500,000 education brochures; provide counselling to 40 local families, develop a smart phone app to assist with our education services as well as contribute to a research fund," she said.

And the work of Red Nose was incredibly meaningful.

"Locally we conduct around 70 safe sleeping classes to new and expecting parents and their families. We visit hospitals and work with health care professionals such as midwives and nurses keeping them up-to- date with the latest research and safe sleeping practices and we conduct safe sleeping workshops for educators caring for babies in day care centres," Ms Ridgley said.

"In the ACT, alone, we receive on average two new calls for counselling support every week. Over the past two weeks, while we've all been complaining about minor things in life such as the cold, frost on the windscreen and that irritating cough that won't go away, our counsellors took 10 new calls from local families who experienced the heartbreaking loss of a baby."
