A new wave of festivals are ditching the bar and replacing it with yoga, exercise and mindfulness to give participants a whole different kind of high.

Married couple Jacque and Jonnie Halstead are behind Wanderlust festivals and events across Australia and New Zealand, which are events focussed on mindful living, with their first visit to Canberra coming up in November.

Jonnie spent 20 years working in the entertainment industry running festivals and night club events, while Jacque was a yoga teacher and naturopath. Seeing the rise of interest in health and mindfulness, they were keen to tap into the market.

"Wanderlust Australia New Zealand represents the perfect marriage of my world and my wife's," said Jonnie.

Wanderlust itself was started in Brooklyn, New York, back in 2009, with events now running throughout Canada, the US, and Central and South America. The Halsteads contacted the founders three years ago wanting to bring the events to Australasia, and they have been doing exactly that ever since.

Wanderlust 108 is their one day event, which has already been run across other capital cities in Australia in New Zealand is coming to Stage 88 on November 19.

The event is essentially a triathlon - but not like you know it.

It starts with a 5 kilometre run - or walk, followed by a mass yoga session to music, then a guided meditation, and to finish it all off, a giant dance party - a "mindful triathlon".

And Halstead said it's not just an event for those already deeply ingrained in the health and yoga community, and calls the event, a "gateway experience".

"We're trying to inspire in a very accessible way those that are living busy suburban life to try mindful practice, whether that be some kind of yoga, some kind of meditation, or just learning how to breathe and be healthier."

With the business continuing to grow, Halstead said its indicative of the change in the market.

"As adults we're all now looking to invest our entertainment dollar on experiences, rather than just blowing it every weekend or even a few brain cells at a music festival, which I think has been common place for Aussies and Kiwis for far too long," he said.

"I think we all want to wake up on a Monday feeling good going into the week. And I think as a western culture there's a huge paradigm shift towards betterment and experiences of true value."
