This year for Book Week, two of Carlie Gibson's' children dressed up as characters from the charming new book, The Sisters Saint-Claire — made even more more special because she wrote it.

Allen and Unwin has just published The Sisters Saint-Claire, the first book for Ms Gibson, a mum-of-three from Gilmore.

Beautifully illustrated by Tamsin Ainslie, the book was inspired by Ms Gibson's own childhood growing up as the oldest of five sisters in country NSW and also, later in life, travelling through France and soaking up its villages and country markets.

The book is the story of sisters Harriet, Violet, Beatrice, Minette and Cecile — five French mice, "who love food, fashion and family" and prove "how greatness can come in any size". It also includes a recipe at the back for Croque Monsieur ("a French grilled ham and cheese sandwich and a sisters Saint-Claire favourite").

Ms Gibson, 37, launched the book at Holy Family Primary School in Gowrie on Thursday evening. Her and husband Peter's three children — Finn, 9, Isla, 7, and Beau, 5, all attend the school and Ms Gibson has been reading the book this week to classes there.

And the book has her children's approval.

"Oh, they are so proud, they really are," Ms Gibson said. "They know a lot of the book off my heart. I'm absolutely thrilled."

A former journalist and media officer for former federal politicians Peter McGauran and Mal Brough, Ms Gibson said she always had a passion to write a children's book.

"I was writing for living but it was frustrating not being able to write creatively," she said.

Now working in campaigns for the Australian Tax Office, Ms Gibson took 12 months to write the book and was not deterred by being knocked back on other projects by publishers.

And so came Book Week, with Isla dressing as Cecile and Beau as Pierre (the dad mouse).

Maybe there will be more little French mice running around at Book Week next year.

"I would like to do a second book in the series," she said. "I hope it's the start of something."
