Canberra will this year lose one-day international cricket, the Westside Container Village and the Australia Day Live concert. Plans are underway for a fence to go up around Parliament, putting a stop to people rolling down its hills, the AIS Arena could become a specialist "Volleydome" and the ANU Bar looks set to be torn down. Where's the fun in any of that? Slowly Canberra was starting to be seen as more than the home of politicians (who generally don't live here anyway), and a tourism expert is warning that this could all add up to a hit to the capital's evolving image. Malcolm Turnbull launched the Digital Transformation Office as communications minister in 2015, to drive his vision of "agile and innovative" government by working with departments to enhance their use of digital technology. The PM's pet public service project has spent more than $18 million hiring temporary workers and contractors in its less than 18 months' existence. Other taxpayer-funded spending by the micro-agency includes $1 million for five months of "agile coaching" by a private sector outfit Pragmateam, $43,000 on whiteboards and hundreds of thousands of dollars on public relations. This is a bit of an odd one. For the past 10 years, the University of Canberra and the ACT Auditor-General have been locked in a battle over passwords. Or more specifically, when people should be made to update their passwords. The auditor wants it to happen regularly. UC, well, it says that could actually do more harm than good. At the heart of it all is an interesting debate on internet security, and Daniel Burdon's story is worth a read.

What would happen if we all stopped checking our work emails out of hours? It's something Jenna Price ponders in her latest column. Research from the Australia Institute tells us the average full-time worker in Australia loses 5.1 hours a week to unpaid overtime – or 264 hours a year; and describes that as "time theft". It also says that across Australia unpaid overtime reduces worker incomes by $116 billion per year. Which is tremendous for employers but not so good for our families who keep saying things like: "Put the phone away, Mum."

Bree Winchester is reminiscing about the good ol' days at the ANU Bar. There was nothing like it. Feet stuck to the alcohol-soaked carpet, beer in hand, tables and chairs stacked against the wall. And a room full of 1700 people as obsessed with the people on stage as you were. The ANU Bar is set to be torn down next year, but there are still plenty of memories of some great bands that graced its stage: from Hunters and Collectors to The Church, Tool and Lou Reed to Fishbone. And Faith No More, to the Beastie Boys, Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, Frenzal Rhomb and plenty more.
