Canberra photographer Ian Williams, of Calwell, planned to take pictures Tuesday night's "supermoon" but the cloud cover made visibility difficult. Instead, Mr Williams used the brightest of the moon and flashes of lightning to capture the storm.

"I was planning to shoot the supermoon rising over Tuggeranong homestead but I have a change of mind when I saw the storm coming over Tuggeranong Hill," Mr Williams said.

"I quickly headed out to Tharwa and shot this incredible storm cracking away behind the Tharwa Shearing shed. The farmer was driving along his paddock and nicely side lit the water tank near the shed."

Mr Williams parked along the side of the road and took the photo on a ISO 100, f2.8 for 13 seconds.

A "supermoon" is a rare lunar event in which the moon appears up to 14 per cent bigger and 30 per cent brighter than normal.

Weatherzone meteorologist Brett Dutschke said the storm was related to a cool change that moved through the area late Tuesday.

"The moon would have still appeared quite large and would have been more brighter than usual yesterday," he said.

He said it was "very normal to see a run of dry days in between stormy days" during this time of year.

But by Wednesday the storm cleared up for a partly cloudy day.

Temperatures are expected to rise this weekend. A high of 36 degrees is forecast for Saturday, and a high of 37 on Sunday.
