According to a national industry report, favourable weather conditions led to a crush of 21 tonnes with vineyards in Murrumbateman searching for new ways to store and distribute surplus fruit.

For Nick Spencer, the winemaker at Eden Road vineyard north of Canberra, the 2015 season was "just perfect" with the local shiraz likely to be an award-winner.

"For the first month of the growing season it was challenging as we had hot and cold spells, but once we got to autumn it was relatively dry and punctuated by occasional rain," he said.

"Warm days with cool nights were perfect conditions for slow and methodical ripening, which ensured the acidity of the grapes did not drop too quickly."

Mr Spencer said the bumper vintage coincided with a growing interest in the region's cool climate wines.

"I'm really positive about the Canberra region because it has been popular with critics and journalists for a long time but now consumers are starting to catch on," he said.

"It's been relatively easy to get restaurant listings so far but to get consumers purchasing Canberra wines has been another challenge on its own.

"Ultimately it's a reflection of what people want to drink at the moment, which is a medium body style of wine that can be matched with food."

Mr Spencer said changing tastes had resulted in "incredibly strong" sales for Eden Road and many others wineries in the region.

Mount Majura Vineyard winemaker Frank van de Loo said many vineyards in the Canberra region had experienced an increase in sales and recognition in recent years.

"We have been riding the wave a little bit because the style of winemaking here has become more and more popular, especially the medium body shiraz," he said.

"I think we have been steadily growing awareness nationally and even compared to five years ago, the Canberra district wines have become fashionable and in demand across Australia."

Mr van de Loo said it was perhaps too early to tell how successful the 2015 vintage would be but for the moment, his concerns were primarily logistical.

"We're running out of space to store the wine or time to bottle it," he said.

"We have just realised the first of our 2015 riesling range as there has been a lot of demand in previous months and we are continuing to see that."

Four Winds vineyard in Murrumbateman produced so much fruit it decided to use its surplus to raise funds for Companion House in Canberra, which helps vulnerable people including refugees.

In a partnership with Collector Wines and Eden Road, $174 of a $200 case of Shiraz was donated to Companion House.

But plans for excess grapes and the successes of the cooler Canberra wine district were a contrast to warmer inland wine regions.

According to the Winemaker Federation Australia's 2015 vintage report, the national crush of 1.67 million tonnes was marginally lower than the seven year average and a decline on 1.83 million tonnes recorded in 2013.

Federation chief executive Paul Evans said many producers in the warm inland regions continued to experience enormous challenges.

"Our analysis shows that 92 per cent of production in warm inland areas is unprofitable," he said.

Mr Evans said free trade agreements in Asia and a more favourable exchange rate could help the industry rebound but more action was needed.

"Specifically, we need the resources and promotional activities to restore sustained global consumer interest in Australian wine," he said.

"Adequate funding for the global marketing of our wines is critical if we are to compete with heavily subsidised old world producers and lower cost new world producers."
