Macarthur-resident Mark Jekabsons' photograph of Gibraltar Falls in Namadgi National Park was announced as the overall winner in the 2014 Top GeoShot photo competition on Wednesday.

Over 360 photographs were received from keen shutterbugs across Australia, centred around the 2014 theme of 'Great Southern Land'.

The competition is run every year as part of Geoscience Australia's Earth Science Week.

Mr Jekabsons said the fact that a photo from the ACT could beat out shots from across all of Australia spoke to the natural beauty of the Canberra region.

"With my work I do a lot of field work, so I'm out bush quite a bit so I get to see some pretty amazing places and scenery... Canberra has a lot of this right on our doorstep and it's really a boon for photographers," he said.

"We've got as good here around Canberra as anywhere else and you've only got to look at some of the work Canberra photographers do around and about to see what's around us."

An ecologist who has lived in Canberra for just over 18 years, Mr Jekabsons said he had been interested in photography for as long as he could remember.

He said he vividly recalled the day he had taken the award-winning photo.

"It was a similar day to this, it had been raining quite heavily and I thought I'd head out after the rain stopped and get a photo of the falls when there was a fair bit of rain going over," he said.

"It was a nice dim, even light - a good day for taking photos."

Geoscience Australia chief executive officer Dr Chris Pigram said the entries in 2014 had been of a very high standard and had beautifully captured the country's magnificent landscapes.

"While Earth science is all around us, many of us barely notice the influence it has on our everyday lives. This competition aims to increase awareness of this, with entrants encouraged to demonstrate the importance of geoscience," Dr Pigram said.

New South Wales resident Callum Porter won the student category with his photo of the distinctive, volcanic Cathedral Rocks formation in Kiama.

A selection of entries will be put on display in the Geoscience Australia foyer in Canberra throughout the year.
