"I came for the fashion," the lovely Kelly Barnes declared. Well didn't we all, Kelly? While some are here for the horses or to have a bit of a gamble, for a lot of us Melbourne Cup Day is all about style.
Down at Thoroughbred Park in Canberra, the show ponies are out in force already, many of them sporting on-trend neon accessories, peplums, florals and brights.
The aforementioned Ms Barnes looked fantastic alongside her good mate Kimberley Macleod. Ms Macleod's style statement was all about bright colours teamed with a smile, Ms Barnes was mad about accessories.
Fashions on the Field emcee Sarah Kelly was smashing in a colour-blocked frock from Cue plus lime accessories and a hat by milliner Christine Waring.
"All the bright colours are so refreshing," Ms Kelly said.
"Colour will be popular with the judges. I'm seeing a bit of everything: florals, lace."
Sarah Busby dazzled in a floral frock and DIY hat.
Francesca Droulias opted for elegance and simplicity. Her topper was made by her aunt, milliner Flavia D'Ambrosio.
Amanda Rowen's neon accessories popped against a background of basic black. Ms Rowen, who studied millinery under Christine Waring, created her wire and ribbon hat in six hours the night before this event.
The Fashions on the Field events begin at 1.30pm.
