VISITORS will get a sneak peek behind the gates at Government House on Sunday when the grounds and garden open to the public.

Gardening co-ordinator Andrew Thompson, pictured, and his team of eight horticulturalists have been putting the finishing touches on the 54 hectares of parklands.

''We always ensure that the grounds and gardens are kept at the highest standard for all visitors - from school tours and public guests to the large-scale events like ceremonial arrivals of foreign presidents. But there's always last minute tidying-up to do immediately before any event,'' he said.

Money raised from open day ticket sales go to The Smith Family to ensure disadvantaged children receive the best education possible.

Gates at Government House, Dunrossil Drive, Yarralumla, open at 10am and close at 4pm. Tickets available at the gate - $10 adult, $8 concession and $25 families.
