RSPCA ACT commissioned the stuffed toy for a fundraising campaign after the runaway popularity of the Canberra merino.

"We've had a great response, $13,000 has come in from the campaign and the funny thing is 85 per cent of people who donated are Canberra based," chief executive Tammy Ven Dange said.

"We've had some international donations but we've been surprised at the local support, especially from people who haven't donated to the RSPCA before."

Ms Ven Dange said the flocculent fugitive, who roamed Mulligan's Flat swathed in more than 40 kilograms of wool before his world-famous haircut, is settling into life with the RSPCA quite well.

"He really likes some of our staff members. He actually knows the person who brings him the good food. He prefers barley oats more than grass or hay. He's been eating dry grass for so long he knows what's good," she said.

"He's gotten pretty comfortable with me taking photos and videos. He doesn't like the vets though, they say it's not fun having a patient who doesn't appreciate your work."

Chris has even nabbed himself a new nickname.

"He's got a very deep baritone voice, now he's more comfortable he's more vocal. He's like Barry White," Ms Ven Dange said.

She believes that after his international notoriety, Chris will be happy to live out his days in a quiet pasture – and they may have finally found the right home for him.

"We're trying to put weight on him. We're also trying to get the pink bits off him so he can live in peace [without being recognised]," she said.

"Our preference was to find him a flock, not a giant flock because he hasn't been around other sheep for so long, although our director jokes he had a mob to hang out with because we found him with kangaroos, [but] he's resilient, he's proven that."

They've found a home for his record-breaking fleece too.

"Our intentions are to preserve it and to display it at the shelter and we're working with the National Museum to do it properly," Ms Ven Dange said.

"The more people who come to see it, the more people who will adopt animals or make donations. After that we'll most likely donate it to the museum."

That's not to say the public hasn't had other ideas.

"I've had some strange requests for the wool, even for the daggy bits, and I had a knitting group call up the other day. It's not really usable but people are curious to see it," Ms Ven Dange said.
