The farmers will also install surveillance near their Clyde River leases, after a series of stock and equipment thefts.

At a meeting on Friday, October 3, eleven farmers said they were robbed in the past 12 months and agreed to contribute to a reward fund.

Spokesman Ray Wilcox would not reveal the amount,but said a reward would encourage the public to keep an eye out on the river.

"We are depending on the public, who are out on the river fishing," he said.

"You have to catch thieves in the act.

"We can't be on the water all day and night.

"These people can come any time they like."

It was suspected the stolen oysters were being sold in the ACT.

Although theft has increased, it is an old problem for farmers.

"I had about ten thousand dollars worth stolen a few years ago," one farmer said at the meeting.

Trays and equipment have also been taken, adding to costs.

"Sometimes we find the trays dumped," Mr Wilcox said.
