Firefighters extinguished a small fire on a conveyor belt at the Lower Molonglo sewage treatment plant on Monday morning.

Two fire pumpers, the HAZMAT unit and a commander responded to the callout shortly before 10am.Crews wearing breathing apparatus discovered a small fire on the conveyor belt and quickly extinguished it.
A spokesperson for Icon Water said during routine operation of the plant's furnace system, a small flare up occurred on the conveyor system that feeds it.
"No personnel were injured during the event nor has there been any damage sustained to the plant," they said.
The plant is Canberra's primary wastewater treatment facility.
Every day it treats up to treats 80 to 90 million litres of wastewater
Around five million litres of solid material, referred to as "sewage sludge", is removed and incinerated in a high temperature furnace a day.
The resulting ash is sold to farmers as a soil conditioner.
