Adrian Nathaniel Andrews, 33, did not enter pleas when he appeared in the ACT Magistrates Court on Wednesday on multiple charges of sexual intercourse without consent, assault with the intention of engaging in sexual intercourse without consent, and unlawfully choking another person.

Court documents said Andrews and the woman had met via an online dating website and swapped contact details.

The pair exchanged texts, which included sext messages from Andrews which the woman said she ignored as she enjoyed their non-sexual conversations.

The pair agreed to meet at Andrews' Barton flat after he finished with a work Christmas party and she arrived about 9.30pm on December 11.

The pair drank wine and chatted, when she allegedly noticed a change in Andrews' eyes.

He allegedly slapped her, called her a "dirty s---", and then grabbed her by the throat and squeezed.

Court documents said Andrews then slapped her again, partially stripped her, and then pushed her to her knees where he violently forced her to perform oral sex.

The woman allegedly suffered splits to both her top and bottom lips in the process.

Andrews then allegedly stood her up, bit her on the neck and nipples, before violently sexually assaulting her on the lounge.

She managed to escape after he fell asleep.

The woman allegedly received text messages from Andrews the next day, including his desire to have sex with her.

She reported the incident to police on Monday and a medical examination found injuries consistent with her claims, including a tear to her genitals.

Andrews was arrested on Tuesday and applied for bail when he appeared in court on Wednesday morning.

The prosecution opposed the application on the grounds he could interfere with witnesses and posed a risk of further offending

The defence said the accused had full-time employment at the Attorney-General's Department, volunteered for charity, and had represented Australia at recent dragon boating world championships.

The court heard he was currently on sick leave after undergoing surgery, which required specialist rehabilitation that he could not receive in custody.

The defence said Andrews did not know where the woman lived and could not contact her as she had since changed her phone number.

The defendant offered to abide by strict bail conditions if released.

But the prosecution said Canberra's size meant he could track down the woman if he wanted.

Chief Magistrate Lorraine Walker denied bail as she could not be satisfied that the risks could be mitigated by conditions.

Ms Walker said she considered strict curfew requirements, but as he lived with a flatmate had no way to enforce the conditions.

The matter will return to court next month.
