Representatives of the group, which includes specialists, intensive care and emergency department doctors, anaesthetics, radiation and oncology staff and retrieval crews, have called for meetings with Health Minister Simon Corbell.

On Tuesday, ACT Health received notice of plans for ongoing industrial action for an indefinite period from midnight on Monday, March 30. The group received authorisation to strike from the Fair Work Commission this month.

Warning that some experienced doctors could leave the territory's health system for good, they have sought a continuation of current pay arrangements for outside practice and work rights and have asked for a separate enterprise agreement for senior doctors.

Patient care will not be compromised during the strike.

Senior doctors will withdraw their services to the Australian National University medical school, not attend some meetings, stop clinical rotations with medical students and complete only essential paper work.

The doctors have called for ACT Health to allow junior practitioners to complete their own enterprise agreement and for negotiations to continue for senior doctors. The case will return to the Fair Work Commission next week.

Canberra Hospital intensive care unit acting clinical director Bronwyn Avard said enterprise bargaining for a new agreement for medical officers in the ACT had been under way for nearly two years, without resolution.

"Senior medical practitioners across multiple specialties and both our public hospitals are actually so concerned now by the proposed enterprise agreement on the table that we feel that industrial action...is really the only way that we are going to get the attention of ACT Health," she said.

"The underlying issue is that they are threatening to strip away a number of the conditions that we currently have. We just want to maintain our current conditions."

Dr Avard said doctors took the prospect of a strike very seriously and she called on Mr Corbell to meet with group representatives.

"I have never done anything like this in my life before," she said. "I feel as though I need to do this because we have tried repeatedly to engage with ACT Health but they're not hearing us. It is important for the public to understand that patient care will not be affected in any way.

"Our simply request is that the senior medical officers be able to sit down and negotiate fairly with ACT Health to develop an agreement that retains existing pay and benefits which will allow the ACT to attract and retain high calibre senior medical practitioners."

ACT Health referred questions about the protected industrial action to Mr Corbell on Thursday. He said previous enterprise agreements have covered all ACT medical practitioners.

"There is no evidence that senior medical practitioners have been in any way disadvantaged by their inclusion in this agreement, and no evidence that fair and efficient bargaining as required by the Fair Work Act has been impeded by the existing model," Mr Corbell said.

"The majority of the matters raised to date go to provisions that are common not only to all medical practitioners, but across the ACT Public Service ... the government remains committed to negotiating a single agreement to cover all medical practitioners employed in the ACT Public Service."

Ministers are not usually involved in industrial negotiations. The government hopes a resolution will be found quickly once the Fair Work Commission hands down its decision on splitting the enterprise agreement for medical professionals.
