The Director of Public Prosecutions says it will appeal against the sentence imposed on a man convicted of the manslaughter of Canberra truckie Bob Knight.

Sydney man Mahmoud Mariam was in August sentenced to at least five years and nine months in jail after the truck driver was killed with a stray bullet.
Justice Megan Latham said Mariam was engaged in a ‘‘mindless display of violence’’ in a carpark gunfight when Mr Knight drove past at Milperra, in Sydney’s southwest, in 2009.
Mariam was sentenced to a maximum of seven years and nine months, with the judge noting he had ‘‘at no stage expressed the slightest remorse for the death of Mr Knight’’.
Mr Knight, 66, was driving along Milperra Road when he was hit in the head by a stray bullet.
Mariam was initially charged with murder along with two other men. After a three-month trial, all three were cleared of murder, but Mariam was found guilty of manslaughter and affray.
NSW Attorney-General Greg Smith said he was pleased the DPP would appeal the sentence.
‘‘It’s one of those decisions that really didn’t instil the public with confidence, so I think it’s worth a look at,’’ he told the Macquarie Network yesterday.
