Police will target speeding and other driving offences, with double demerit point penalties in place from Thursday until Monday April 21 inclusive for the Easter long weekend.

For the Anzac Day long weekend, penalties will be in place from Thursday April 24 until Sunday April 27 inclusive.

Drivers who run red lights or fail to stop at stop signs will receive one extra demerit point. Six demerit points can be applied to the licence of any driver who does not wear a seatbelt or who permits passengers under 16 years-of-age to travel in a vehicle unrestrained.

Drivers who speed by more than 15km/h and up to 30km/h, six demerit points will be applied. Exceeding the speed limit by 45km/h or more will result in 12 demerit points and the risk of licence suspension.

Police Minister Simon Corbell also called on Canberrans to participate in the ACT Driver Survey, part of a review into the graduated driver licensing scheme.

In 2012, 14 per cent of drivers involved in casualty crashes in the ACT were provisional licence holders, despite only representing about 7 per cent of all licences.

“The review is looking into a range of options to improve the safety of new drivers, such as minimum supervised driving hours and passenger restrictions,” Mr Corbell said.

A draft report would published later this year, when the public would have another opportunity to provide comments.

Mr Corbell said officials were aware of the possible impact some restrictions and sanctions could have on young drivers and their families.

‘‘Consideration will be given to feedback about the potential need for exemptions in particular circumstances.”
