Shayne Robert Webbe blew .204, more than four times the legal limit, in the aftermath of the crash during evening prayers on September 9 last year.
The Yarralumla crash was the culmination of a three-hour journey from the site of his mother's grave in the NSW country town of Eugowra in the state's central west.
The court heard the 49-year-old man consumed six beers during the drive.
Webbe's lawyer, Paul Edmonds, said his client was struggling with alcoholism but was managing with the support of his family.
Mr Edmonds noted Webbe had held a licence for 31 years and had no previous convictions.
He said the delivery truck driver was set to lose work because of the court proceedings.
But prosecutor Amanda Clarke said the simultaneous drinking and driving showed contempt for the community.
''We encourage people not to drive, drink then drive, we need to encourage people not to drink and drive,'' magistrate Peter Dingwall agreed.
Ms Clarke added it was very lucky no members of the public were hurt.
Mr Dingwall took into account the man's plea of guilty, the real potential for harm and the fact Webbe would ultimately be liable for the damage to the other vehicle.
The magistrate said $1000 was a significant fine, and also disqualified Webbe from driving for 12 months.
