As residents expressed anger this week over car parks such as those near Questacon and the National Library being closed to those watching the fireworks display, new figures show parking fines increased at this year's Enlighten Festival.

At least $90,000 worth of fines were issued by the National Capital Authority during Enlighten, with many drivers booked for overstaying parking limits.

NCA figures show there were 825 infringements during the 2018 festival, an increase of 236 from the year before.

In the week of Canberra's Balloon Spectacular and Skyfire, the NCA handed out 466 parking infringements, with almost half of these happening during the fireworks spectacular.

The NCA data showed in the same week in 2017, 331 fines were handed out to drivers.

During the 10-day period of the light installations and Night Noodle Markets, 359 fines were handed out, rising from 258 the previous year.

NCA chief executive Sally Barnes said many of the car parks were closed for Skyfire in order to comply with anti-terrorism policies.

"In collaboration with event organisers and the AFP, all events held on national land undergo measures to ensure public safety in line with Australia's strategy for protecting crowded places from terrorism," she said.

"To support public safety measures for major events on national land, additional roads and car parks may be requested to be closed. To further ensure public safety within the area for these events, additional signage and marshals are put in place."

Ms Barnes said there were many factors behind the increase in parking fines.

"This increase could be attributed to the rain affecting visitation to the 2017 event. Infringements were issued for parking in disabled parking without a permit and unsafe parking such as nature strips and footpaths," she said.

"Large scale events such as Enlighten bring an increased number of people to the Parliamentary Zone, and there may be some people who do not adhere to the measures in place."

Parking fines in the ACT start at $114 for offences such as overstaying parking times, to $600 for parking in a disabled space.

"The National Capital Authority is responsible for the public safety and protection of spaces and places and cultural and heritage significance within the Parliamentary Zone, where the recent Enlighten event was held," Ms Barnes said.

"With more Canberrans attending large-scale events, parking infringement notices issued within the Parliamentary Zone compared to last year's March event have only marginally increased.

"With tens of thousands of people attending multiple events over this period ... illegal parking represents only a small percentage of visitors."
