Awarding the construction team its Environmental Excellence Award winner for Australasia, the association said the 80-metre-high dam - costing $409 million - would serve as an example for similar projects around the world.
Bulk Water Alliance partnership project manager John Vida said the award would be presented at the IECA Australasia Erosion and Sediment Control conference dinner in November.
"This is fantastic recognition for the excellent environmental outcomes achieved throughout the project,'' Mr Vida said.
''Preserving and protecting the natural environment of the Cotter valley has been one of our key targets from the outset of this project and we are delighted to be recognised for our efforts in this way."
About 100 metres downstream of the existing Cotter Dam, the new dam project will have a capacity of 78 gigalitres, nearly 20 times its current size.
