The Garran site provides accommodation for blood cancer patients being treated at Canberra Hospital and opened three weeks ago.

John James Foundation chairman Paul Smith said staff and trade contractors arrived at work on Friday to find the Rusden Street property had been targeted overnight.

"It's hard to imagine why anyone would want to steal from people who are facing a life-threatening illness like leukaemia or myeloma," Professor Smith said.

"It's obviously extremely disappointing that something like this has happened at a facility designed to assist families who are facing a very difficult period in their life."

He said the offenders broke in through a fence before they stole items including a washing machine, fridge and barbecue, all of which had been donated by Canberra businesses.

ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr officially opened the $7 million village, a project of Canberra medical charity the John James Foundation, on August 5.

It was designed to provide a home away from home for patients with illnesses such as leukaemia, myeloma and lymphoma.

Professor Smith said contractors were still putting the finishing touches on the village and the foundation would work with police and the community to return or replace the stolen goods and repair damage quickly.

ACT Policing confirmed on Friday afternoon it had received reports of a break-in at the property and was investigating.
