The constant flow of bicycles gliding around Canberra's West Basin is as ubiquitous to Lake Burley Griffin today as swans floating on its surface or a spurt of water from the Captain Cook Memorial Jet.

More than 100 cyclists descended on Regatta Point to celebrate the lake's 50th year on Friday - and a lakeside activity that has stood the test of time.
Michelle Brayshaw and daughter Ruby, 5, were among families completing a five-kilometre clue hunt, combining a love of cycling with some historical knowledge.
Pedal Power ACT, the ACT government and ACT Heritage staged the free family event to celebrate the lake's half century and five decades of cycling around it.
It's a particularly special place for Ruby and her pink bicycle. The five-kilometre basin loop was the site of her first ride without training wheels six months ago.
Ruby said she regularly rode her pink bike, adorned with sparkling tassels and a handy basket, and enjoyed spotting animals near the lake.
"Once I touched a lizard," she said.
"I can go fast. I can go forward and backward. I ride my bike and my scooter to school."
The Isaacs family venture to the lake about once a week.
Michelle said she had come and gone from the capital over the years but has always had an affinity with Lake Burley Griffin.
"I used to live near the coast so, I love being near the water," she said.
"It's a great weekend activity, either riding the bikes or walking the dog."
Pedal Power executive officer John Armstrong said Friday's event was a fun way to celebrate the lake's 50th anniversary while fostering a love of cycling - and an appreciation of Canberra's history - among the next generation.
"The ride around Lake Burley Griffin is an iconic one. We really felt it was important to celebrate 50th anniversary with something to do with cycling," he said.
