But for about 60 students, aged four to eight-years-old, they were not the only ones starting out.

The doors of the new Anglican School Googong were cast open on Tuesday for early learners, while kindergarten to year 2 followed suit today for the official inaugural first day.

The students, along with their teachers and principal Ian Hewitt, checked out classrooms they will get to know well over the next year.

Mr Hewitt said the feeling was surreal – after much planning and preparation the school community was finally ready to welcome its students.

"It's amazing to see the reactions on parents' faces when they walk into school with their children – it's not like a school, it is wonderful," he said.

"It's bright, colourful, open and airy.

"It feels like a place that you want to be in."

Mr Hewitt said apprehension was the overwhelming emotion for young students on their first days.

He said it was soon inched out by the excitement of meeting new friends and learning new things.

The Anglican School Googong was pitted as becoming "a stellar institution … underpinned by innovative teaching practice and excellence in academic achievement" according to its website.

The school is set to expand year on year.

The first year 7 group will start in 2018 and the first year 12 class will graduate in 2023.

Mr Hewitt said he was thrilled to see the new building finally filled with people.

"[I'm most looking forward to] actually having children in the school, seeing children back in the classroom and willing to learn," he said.

Mum-of-three Rachel Howden said her children had been on the list for places at the new school for some time.

Alex, 3, started yesterday, Toby, 6, will start year 1 today and her 15-month-old daughter Zoe will attend preschool at Googong in the coming years.

"My husband and I had seen (principal) Ian and talked about the plans for the school, I felt really confident in his vision for it," Mrs Howden said.
