They have five boys, aged 9 to 17, who may need coaxing out the door of their Karabar home, uniformed, bags in hand, and lunches at the ready.

For the next four terms, all five of the Loadsman lads - Tadhg, Brynn, Keegan, Chase and Jarrod - will be at school together in years four through to 12 at St Edmund's College, Canberra.

''The boys are very self-sufficient, which the school has obviously helped with … which is nice,'' mum Tascha Loadsman said.

''They tell them it's their fault if they don't have something, not their mum's fault,'' she laughed.

The five brothers will join large swathes of the territory's schoolchildren who end their summer holidays and return to school on Monday morning.

Most public schools are back this week, as are many of the larger private schools, including Marist College, Canberra Grammar School, St Clare's College, and Daramalan College.

But the start of the term is special for St Edmund's, with the school celebrating its 60th anniversary.

The school has transformed markedly since 300 boys and a handful of brothers were photographed on the front steps for its first day back on February 2, 1954.

It now has 1100 students from year four to year 12, and Mrs Loadsman says she's been glad to have seen her sons' journeys through the school.

''It's nice, I think, to see the evolution, from the youngest to the oldest,'' she said.

''It's very special to see them all together.''

School principal Peter Fullagar said it was a great benefit to have the Loadsman boys together, not just for the school, but for the brothers themselves.

''I think it's the relationships between the boys, and you can see that today, by how well they get along,'' Mr Fullagar said.

''We have a group of five boys here, [but] I know we also have families of four boys, families of three.

''Over the history of the school it's been one of those great things that families are here and they're involved, and they bring their sons back to the school.''
