Mr Kent resigned before a disciplinary hearing on Wednesday night over his conduct during the party's federal preselection.

The key agitator in the push to overturn the February preselection, Mr Kent said on Thursday “I can no longer be part of a system that seems to exist solely for the benefit of professional politicians and their staffers.”

He added that action he has launched against the party in the ACT Civil and Administrative Tribunal was now likely to collapse at a hearing before the tribunal next week.

The party's management said Mr Kent resigned on Wednesday night before the disciplinary hearing could hear complaints about the former president's conduct.

Mr Kent was accused of a range of rule breaches, including publicly criticising members of the management committee, distributing material to the party membership and bringing the party into disrepute.

The division said the matter was now closed.

“The Party has well established rules to guide the management committee for handling disciplinary matters, and a clearly defined set of rules for members to abide by,” a party spokesman said.

Mr Kent said he quit after a he was refused access at the hearing to documents and the names of party members who had lodged anonymous complaints about his conduct.

He said on Thursday “I have no idea what the ACT Liberal Party stands for and a lot of work needs to be done to convince the electorate that we represent something worth fighting for.”

“In the ACT, the two operate as one with the broader interests of the party coming second to those of the parliamentary members.”
