Track and Field athlete Robyn Lorraway had lent the torch, which she carried during the 2000 Sydney Olympic Relay, to a friend and school teacher to show her class at the beginning of the week.
Her friend later placed the torch on-top of her car and drove between Elia Ware Crescent and the Bonner Shops on Mabo Boulevard before realising her mistake.
The torch was then reported missing to police on Tuesday.
Despite the sentimental significance attached to the iconic torch, Ms Lorraway described her friend’s actions as an “honest mistake”.
“A lot of people may have placed something on top of the car and driven off before realising,” she said.
“I have great hope that the torch has been found by someone nearby and will be handed to the police as soon as possible.”
ACT Policing is encouraging anyone who may have located the missing Olympic Torch to take it to the nearest police station.
Anyone with information which could help in the search is encouraged to contact Police Operations on 131 444.
