The first data issued from last year's census showed the ACT had the nation's second-biggest population boost last year. It has also revised up previous readings for the ACT's population.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show that the median age is creeping up even though Canberrans remain younger on average, that the proportion of men is slowly catching the proportion of women, and that the territory could grow to have almost 650,000 people by 2051.
All up, there were another 6513 people calling Canberra home last year, bringing the city's population to 370,729 people, or 1.6 per cent of the Australian population of 22,485,340. The ACT's 1.79 per cent increase in 2011 is behind only Western Australia's 2.9 per cent, and above the national average of 1.36 per cent.
The ACT had the second-highest population growth over the five years from June 2006 to June 2011, too, at 10.1 per cent.
The main driver of the ACT's population growth was ''natural increase'', or births minus deaths, which accounts for just over half last year's rise.
Almost 10 per cent was people moving from other states and a bit more than a third was people coming from other countries.
Canberra's fertility rate was above the national average, at 1.92 births per woman - with 5111 new children last year - and the territory's death rate was the nation's lowest, at 5.25 deaths per 1000 people.
The ACT also had the lowest infant mortality rate, at 3.5 deaths per 1000 live births, compared with 4.11 nationally.
It has the second-youngest population; the median age is 34.5, up from 34.4 in 2006 and 29.5 in 1991.
''All states and territories experienced an increase in the proportion of their populations aged 65 years and over during this same period, with the largest increase recorded in the ACT (6.2 per cent to 10.5 per cent),'' the bureau said.
The figures also showed 18.1 per cent of the population was 14 or younger and 71.4 per cent was 15-64.
The proportion of men in the ACT is increasing, but there are still more women in the nation's capital, just as there are in most jurisdictions.
There are 98.8 men for every 100 women in the ACT.
The increase is because more men are migrating to Australia, and their life expectancy is increasing more quickly than women's.
