Human Rights Commissioner president Gillian Triggs has been announced as guest speaker at the ACT Supreme Court ceremonial sitting next Monday to mark the 800th anniversary of the sealing of the Magna Carta.

A Supreme Court statement said Professor Triggs would discuss the document's contemporary legacy in Australian law.

The announcement comes a days after the Abbott Government increased its sustained campaign of criticism of the watch dog.

Immigration Minister Peter Dutton hinted last week Professor Triggs should quit over her criticism of the government's policy of stopping asylum-seeker boats and her approach to human rights issues.

Mr Dutton accused Professor Triggs of reducing her "position to basically that of a political advocate".

Earlier this year, Prime Minister Tony Abbott - in response to the commission's inquiry into children in detention, which he labelled a "political stitch-up" - said the government had lost confidence in Professor Triggs.

Undeterred, Professor Triggs has continued to be a vocal critic of the government, including attacking the expansion of discretionary ministerial powers in Australia, which she labelled a "a growing threat to democracy".

The ceremony will begin at 9.30am on Monday.
