The teenager is suing Dr Hocking and Calvary Public Hospital through law firm Maurice Blackburn, which says this is the first of nine separate medical negligence matters it is handling involving the orthopaedic surgeon.

Documents filed in the ACT Supreme Court allege Dr Hocking needlessly removed bone and tissue from the girl's hip without consent.

It is also claimed he left a piece of dense black plastic inside her hip which was one centimetre in diameter and came from an arthroscopic cannula.

The patient needed a total hip replacement, which went some of the way to fixing the damage allegedly caused by Dr Hocking's ''reckless indifference'' to her welfare.

The damaged allegedly caused was hip instability.

It is claimed the long-lasting effects of his actions include impaired mobility and movement and a reduced ability to kneel, bend at the knees, stand for long periods of time and play contact sports.

The future need for specialist and allied medical services and domestic help as well as the mental and emotional impact, such as anxiety and a loss of confidence and self-esteem, were also included in the girl's statement of claim.

The claim document said just after birth the girl was diagnosed with hip dysplasia, which had been conservatively managed by doctors until recently.
