Derapet was no ordinary fight. It is understood to be the longest, and largest, engagement involving Australian regular forces – as opposed to Commandos or the Special Air Service Regiment – since the Vietnam War, and the number of awards won is believed to be the highest from a single Australian action since then. A leaked soldier's email also ensured it was controversial.
