Kim Kardashian posted a photo on her Instagram account of Hole in the Wall Beach near Bristol Point in Jervis Bay with the caption "Sydney".
A number of Kardashian's 21 million Instagram followers were quick to pick up on her geographical faux pas; Instagram user @kewanaparsons said "as a traditional owner of the area in this photo, this is not Sydney".
Another, @kirstylee984, said "two and a half hours south of Sydney, not even close! When "promoting" please get the place right".
Locals were given a good clue to the actual whereabouts of the photo, national park staff had closed the beach on Monday so the American reality television star could be part of a secret photo shoot.
Hole in the Wall beach is in the Booderee National Park, which is Wreck Bay Aboriginal community land. It's part of Jervis Bay Territory, technically the ACT.
A spokeswoman for Parks Australia, responsible for Commonwealth national parks including Boorderee, refused to answer any questions on the financial details of the beach closure on Monday.
The spokeswoman said the agency were "unable to comment" when asked whether the TV star was responsible for the closure of the beach.
