The lane closures will affect drivers, cyclists and bus travellers from March 17 until December this year, Transport Minister Meegan Fitzharris said, while Hibberson Street, between Kate Crace Street and Gungahlin Place, will be closed to cars and buses from April 10.

She said the closures were mainly due to road works to widen Flemington Road to make room for the light rail alignment, ahead of track laying to begin later this year.

Ms Fitzharris said while there would be detours in place, motorists should avoid Flemington Road where possible, including driving from the City to Gungahlin via Barton Highway and Gungahlin Drive, using Gundaroo Drive or from Federal Highway to Gungahlin via Horse Park Drive and Anthony Rolfe Avenue.

Lane closures on Flemington Road during the nine month period include: just north of Sandford Street to south of Well Station Drive - where two lanes each way will be cut to one lane travelling each way and Randwick Road to Sandford Street - where northbound traffic will be cut to one lane.

Other areas of Flemington Road affected included: Federal Highway to north of Sandford Street - where the southbound bus lane will be closed and buses will run on the single remaining southbound lane and access to the Lysaght Street intersection will be closed and detours via a slip road will be in place.

For cyclists, the southbound path running parallel to Flemington Road, adjacent to EPIC, will also be closed but both north and southbound on-road cycle lanes will be open between Federal Highway and Sandford Street, and an off-road cycle path will be available between Sandford Street and Well Station Drive.

Buses along Flemington Road will also be affected by the light rail construction work, with stops 4927 and 4928 near Randwick Road closed for the nine-month period, while stops 4751 and 4752 near EPIC, 6036 after Sandford Street and 6037 after Lysaght Street staying open for the period.
