On Saturday, members of the Belconnen Magpies Football Club will use their first set of home games to honour the memory of Rachael Netting, a Canberra mother-of-two who died after doctors missed a curable cancer.

Her husband Paul Netting, who has played more than 300 games for the Magpies, will be present as players and friends pay special tribute.

Club vice-president Jo Foster said it was a chance to pay tribute to a woman and family who meant so much to so many.

"They really have touched our club, and this is the least we could do, paying tribute to her and the family to say thank you," she said.

"People like that don't come around, they're one in a million."

The tragic events that led to Mrs Netting's death began when she went to Calvary Hospital with abdominal pain.

Scans picked up an ovarian cyst and a mass on her liver. The cyst was removed, but the liver mass went uninvestigated.

Mrs Netting was discharged and liver cancer, which evidence suggests was then treatable, spread.

She went back to hospital a year later, again in significant pain. This time she was told the cancer was now incurable.

Mrs Netting was given months to live, and died earlier this year.

The public servant, who worked with the Australian Taxation Office, played one season with the Magpies but was involved in the club for much longer.

"It's just such a tragic event that's happened and it's the least the clubs can do, to pay that tribute and respect to her and her family," said Ms Foster.

Games will kick off at the Magpies home ground, the Kippax enclosed oval, from 10am.
