Robert Joseph Reyes, 33 of Palmerston, is accused of entering the Gungahlin video store about 11am on Saturday morning.
Reyes threatened staff of the video store, and demanded they hand over money.
It is alleged he was holding an object wrapped in a plastic bag, which he told staff was a handgun.
He allegedly made off with $1100 in bank notes.
Police said in a statement to the media that they reviewed CCTV footage and arrested Reyes in Palmerston.
Police said they then executed a search warrant and seized items from a home on Kosciuszko Avenue.
Reyes appeared in the ACT Magistrates Court for the first time on Monday.
He was charged with aggravated robbery and possessing marijuana.
The court also heard he was holding a black coloured pistol.
The 33-year-old did not apply for bail or enter pleas, and the matter will be back before court on Friday.
