Joshua Higgins, 24, appeared in the ACT Magistrates Court on Monday, after he allegedly attacked staff and damaged property in the Red Chilli Sichuan Restaurant on Alinga Street in Civic on Sunday night.
Higgins entered the restaurant about 9.20pm Sunday, and asked staff for food, police say.
Staff told the man the restaurant was closed and asked him to leave, police say.
He allegedly assaulted three staff members, and began to smash plates and glassware.
Police accused Higgins of assaulting the staff with broken glass, and, at one point, held down a staff member with broken glass pressed to his or her neck.
The 24-year-old appeared briefly in the ACT Magistrates Court on Monday afternoon, charged with trespass, three assaults, property damage, and possessing an offensive weapon with intent.
The court heard he had experienced problems with alcohol in the past, and had been himself victim to an assault that left him requiring facial reconstruction.
Those responsible for that assault had been jailed, the court heard.
Magistrate Bernadette Boss ordered Higgins be taken to a health facility for a urgent mental health assessment.
The matter will return to court at a later date.
