The 20-year-old from Forde has been modelling for a number of years, with a keen interest in fashion and ambassador roles.
In 2013 she was named Myer Face of Canberra Racing and she said this was a good platform to pursue a role like Miss World – a competition which really appealed to her.
“It was just a competition that really struck my fancy – it just wasn’t purely based on looks,” she said.
“It wasn’t just about how you walk or how you look – it’s a bit more meaningful and it opens up a lot more doors that I’m interested in in the long run.”
While Goodwin said she’s extremely nervous ahead of the finals, she’s looking forward to flying the flag for the ACT and is excited about where the competition could take her.
“Winning would just be life-changing,” she said.
“I have a passion [for] portraying a really healthy image to other people – there are so many people in the spotlight who are portrayed so badly, so you really strive to be a good role model."
The finals will be held in the Hunter Valley from July 24-28, where all of the contestants from around the country will undergo vigorous testing and competing.
As well as photo shoots and runways, the finalists are tested on their fitness, talent and intelligence.
“It’s a huge four days. So really they’re looking for an all-rounder, not just a pretty face,” she said,
“They’re looking for someone who can represent the Miss World Australia brand and do a lot of charitable work as well.”
Guided by the slogan of “beauty with a purpose”, the competition has a strong fund-raising aspect to it, and all contestants have to fund-raiser for Variety – the Children’s Charity.
As part of her fund-raising efforts, Goodwin is holding a shopping extravaganza event on July 18 at the Hellenic Club in Woden, featuring local businesses, live entertainment, raffles and door prizes.
The Miss World competition originated in the United Kingdom, and is one of the largest beauty pageants in the world.
Unlike rival competition Miss Universe, which saw Jennifer Hawkins crowned winner in 2004, Miss World hasn’t seen an Australia winner since 1972.
The Variety Shopping Extravaganza will be held at the Woden Hellenic Club on July 18 from 6-9.30pm. Tickets are available at the door: $15 Adults, $5 Teens, free for under 12s.
