About two-fifths of Canberra suburbs will be affected by the strikes next Monday and Tuesday, as a stoush between drivers and contractor Suez over severance pay continues.

ACT NOWaste director Michael Trushell said due to the wide area the industrial action covered, catch up collection services would not be possible.

Instead, residents of affected suburbs will be able to drop off two large garbage bags of household waste for free at both the Mitchell and Mugga Lane Resource Management Centres from Monday to Sunday next week.

Those using the free drop-off service will need to provide proof of address to show they are from affected suburbs.

Residents can drop recyclables off for free at the six regional recycling drop-off centres.

Mr Trushell warned more strikes were possible over the next month as industrial action can be taken lawfully until June 8.

But Suez's ACT manager Jason Stewart hoped that would not be the case.

"We believe a resolution is achievable with no need for additional industrial action that disrupts essential services to ACT residents and may see waste left in the streets for over a week," he said.

Mr Stewart has previously said Canberra's garbage truck drivers were some of the best paid in the industry, earning on average $95,000 a year.

But Klaus Pinkas from the Transport Workers Union said severance pay was the crux of the negotiations.

He previously told Fairfax Media severance pay was dropped from three week's pay to two when the contract changed hands two years ago, despite assurances from the ACT government this would not happen.

Mr Stewart said the company had tried to meet the union halfway and was disappointed at the latest round of strikes.

"Under our offer employees with 10 years of service would be entitled to a redundancy payment of 30 weeks pay, which is more than double the National Employment Standards," Mr Stewart said

"Our latest offer [provided] a 2.2 per cent wage increase which is well above the national CPI of 1.3 per cent."

But Mr Pinkas said the offer they put on the table was not acceptable.

"They're after three weeks of redundancy payment per year of service," he said.

"Industrial action is a last resort but we have been negotiating since February."

Mr Pinkas said the strike would be called off if the company came back to them with a better offer by Monday.
