The Community Expert Reference Group will help coordinate the government's response to Canberra’s asbestos crisis and will provide direct input into the priorities and work of the Asbestos Response Taskforce.
The taskforce, headed by Andrew Kefford, is due to report to the government this week, and is widely tipped to recommend that Canberra's 1049 Mr Fluffy-contaminated homes be demolished – with possible exemptions for older homeowners who specifically want to continue living in their homes.
The new group has been formed to provide a link between the taskforce and those directly affected by loose-fill asbestos, and to provide a sounding board to the government on the views of affected residents.
One of the members, Brianna Heseltine, founded the Fluffy Owners and Residents' Action Group (FORAG) in May after discovering her own newly-purchased home held remnant amosite asbestos left over from the failed federal clean-up program of the 1980s.
“I will have FORAG's 400-plus families at the front of my mind in my involvement in the Community and Expert Reference Group, and I will be given direct support in that role from FORAG's risk, remediation and demolition working group,” Ms Heseltine said.
“People shouldn't forget that our group saw the views of some very well-paid experts prevail more than two decades ago in the form of a failed $100 million removal program,” she said.
“We will be looking to form constructive solutions to assist the ACT government to address this problem once and for all, while staving off price gouging and keeping a sensible reign on things.”
