The report was originally commissioned to examine the possibility of a third ACTION depot to accommodate demand and cut down on dead running between routes.

But in August 2013, Territory and Municipal Services expanded it to include all depots as well as looking at how light rail could be combined with ACTION's buildings.

The budget of the study was doubled at the same time to $401,000.

ACT director of public transport James Roncon said the report, conducted by transport consultants MRCagney, would recommend new depots in Canberra's north and south.

"Woden is realistically the strategic centre of Canberra so it makes a significant difference to the buses of Canberra if they can be operated out of the south," he said.

"Likewise it would make a significant difference to the system if it could be operated in the north out of Mitchell."

Mr Roncon said this report had been the first official study into how Canberra's ACTION bus system and the new light rail could work together.

He said ACTION had received the final copy of the report and it would be taken to cabinet in the near future.

Mr Roncon said the new depots would be important for the future of Canberra's bus service and could help cut costs.

"We have depots located in Belconnen and Tuggeranong and what that means is that when our network is running if a service starts in Gungahlin, the bus has got a dead run from Belconnen to Gungahlin at the start of the day and between runs," he said.

"The logic was to reduce dead running, save some money and put it back into the network. It would make sense to have a third depot situated somewhere in Canberra."

Mr Roncon said various aspects of light rail had already been incorporated into planning for the future of ACTION buses.

"Once we knew that light rail was a goer we took the opportunity to include capital metro into the study, including where the best location might be [for a joint depot] and whether we should put them together," he said.
