Plans awaiting approval show the new hospital will have 79 surgical/medical beds all in private rooms, 12 post-natal beds, 10 critical care/high-dependency unit beds, six operating theatres, one minor operating theatre and endoscopy suite.

Construction will create 350 building jobs and 38 new, full-time operational hospital jobs will be created once completed, documents show. Calvary Health Bruce chief executive Karen Edwards said staffing had not been finalised. The hospital had advertised for a transition manager to look at the logistics of what was needed.

"We are having ongoing discussions with the current medical staff around the new hospital and their intentions with respect to the services they will provide with the new hospital, " Ms Edwards said.

"The design is a shell that we can move to accommodate a range of things, that's why we are continuing to talk to our doctors about what specialties could go in there," she said.

"I think one of the major design features is it has capacity to grow, it has a mid-level which has a lot of plant but could accommodate additional growth and it could grow higher. It has flexibility to grow with needs of the northern Canberra region," Ms Edwards said.

Planning documents indicate future bed numbers could rise to 138, with 114 staff.

A 10-bed extension to the existing Hyson Green Mental Health Unit also forms part of this project but has no timeframe for completion. Because of its impact on nearby vegetation, it is on hold until an alternative location with lower environmental impact can be found, planning documents show.

The existing 85-bed Calvary Private Hospital is co-located with Calvary Public Hospital. Under an agreement between the Little Company of Mary Health Care and ACT government, the existing private hospital will become available for additional capacity for the public hospital.

On six levels, the new hospital's data centre and central sterilising service is in the basement. A lobby, chapel, pharmacy and administration are on the ground floor and operating theatres are on the first floor. A link bridge to the existing hospital will be on the third level.

Ms Edwards said the new multi-level car park for 704 vehicles should be completed by December. On the west side of the outdoor car parking, it will provide a net increase of 526 spaces. "[Construction] is out of the ground and actually looks like it could be a car park now," Ms Edwards said.

Making way for the new hospital will require removing much of the trees and shrubs over 1.14 hectares of native vegetation. Plans are to retain at least 58 habitat trees.
