Attorney-General Simon Corbell said a renewed partnership with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elected Body, signed on Monday, would aim to reduce recidivism and improve access to services.

Indigenous people account for 17.7 percent of people in detention in Canberra despite accounting for less than 1.5 percent of the ACT population.

The new partnership aims to reduce the number of indigenous people in the Alexander Maconochie Centre to less than 10 percent of the prison population.

"Significant consultation has been undertaken to identify these priority areas, including the development of actions and targets within the action plan, said Mr Corbell.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elected Body chairman Rodd Little said the indigenous community was over-represented in the ACT justice system as victims and offenders.

"This justice partnership seeks to correct these concerns and provide a renewed and continuous commitment in reducing incarceration rates," he said.

"It is crucial that significant collaborative efforts are sustained to ensure realistic milestones and outcomes are achieved."

Mr Little said the elected body would work closely with the government to ensure reporting channels are established to track progress.

"The Elected Body believes the Justice Partnership will provide better opportunities for improvements in relationships and outcomes – now and into the future".

Mr Little said the elected body would work closely with the ACT Government to establish reporting channels and regularly seek feedback from the community.

"The government recognises the need to have a coordinated approach to support individuals and families in contact with the justice system while recognising the importance of culture in the development of future policy and programs," Mr Corbell said.
