It was the first time the Oranjefeest, celebrated widely in the Netherlands and around the world, had been held in the nation's capital.

Organiser Hans van de Zandt said he felt the Dutch had not been celebrated in Canberra for a long time, and he wanted to change that with the festival.

He said one of the main festivities was The Tukkers, a Dutch folk dancing group who travelled from Melbourne for the event.

Decked out in clogs and traditional Sunday best, The Tukkers emcee Herman Munnink said he enjoyed telling the history of Holland through song and dance.

"Each one of the dances that we do is actually a little story about how people used to live," he said.

The Germans and Dutch put aside their historical differences so the community could enjoy the event in an all-weather venue.

Children in brightly coloured clothing played traditional games like sjoelen, while adults mingled speaking Dutch and enjoying delicacies like homemade gevulde speculaas taart.

Home baker Adrian Meijer said despite the tart being a food traditionally eaten in December, the reaction from the Dutch community had been overwhelming.

"They finally get the chance to eat it again," he said.

"They don't have to wait until it is shipped over in December by relatives, because you can only buy it in December in the Netherlands.

"Now they've got the chance to eat it mid-year. It tastes very much like gingerbread, but this is a bit sweeter I think."

For young Canberra family Marc and Emily van Galen and their one-year-old son Willem, Oranjefeest provided the chance to be immersed in Dutch culture without travelling to the Netherlands.

"It's rare to have Dutch events happen in Canberra so we thought we'd just come and check it out," Mr van Galen said.

"We like the Dutch food and games, the Dutch accents bring back a lot of memories from our trips back to visit family in the Netherlands."

Oranjefeest concluded on Saturday night with the King's Ball, where Yvonne Morris showed off her skills as a waitress dressed as a Dutch milkmaid.

"It's lovely to keep our tradition going for the young children," she said.

"I've been involved with the Dutch Club since I was a child.

"We're trying to keep the culture going for the next generations to come."
