Zachary James Tudor Pye, 21, was charged with robbery, common assault and resisting police when he faced the ACT Magistrates Court on Monday. He did not enter pleas.

Police facts said CCTV footage showed a man walk into the Cellarbrations store at Erindale about 7pm on Sunday.

He left soon after when he didn't have money to pay for a case of Carlton dry beer and a packet of cigarettes.

The man got into a car parked out front before another man, who police allege was Mr Pye, got out wearing only blue football shorts.

He went inside and tried to grab cigarettes from an employee at the counter.

The man allegedly grew aggressive, pushing a computer and pulling at the cash drawer as the worker grabbed a stick to defend himself.

Police said Mr Pye pushed the worker in the chest and grabbed packets of cigarettes from the drawer.

When the alleged victim yelled for help, Mr Pye jumped over the counter and ran away with handfuls of cigarettes, dropping some inside the store as he bolted.

Witnesses at a nearby service station ran over to help the store worker and called police.

Mr Pye allegedly ran back inside the store to pick up some of the packets he'd dropped before he fled.

Police later found Mr Pye drinking beer in the garage of an Oxley house.

He struggled as they tried to arrest him and officers twice drew their Tasers but did not use them.

Mr Pye was taken to the ACT Watch House.

Prosecutor David Swan opposed bail in court and said the accused would likely reoffend.

He said the "quite brazen" attack involved some premeditation and the violent incident had endangered innocent members of the public.

The man's Legal Aid duty lawyer said the allegations were "fairly dramatic" and appeared to be alcohol-related. He said Mr Pye was willing to comply with strict conditions if released.

Magistrate Karen Fryar refused bail. The case returns to court in October.
