Femili PNG is one of the few frontline support organisations operating in Papua New Guinea where as many as 70 per cent of women experience sexual or physical assault in their lifetime.

As the issue has reached pandemic proportions the Pacific nation has seen Australia take on the problem head on and Femili PNG casework manager Evan Biseo and her colleagues travelled to Canberra this week to find ways to turn the tides back home.

Ms Biseo heads up a team of 16 within the non-government support service that began operations in Lae, the country's second largest city, thanks to an injection of Australian aid money.

The young organisation has helped 1000 survivors access counselling, support and other interventions since it began, however their work is an early step in what's likely to be a long road toward change.

"We are the only organisation right now doing case management, but we are only dealing with those that are reporting, there are a lot of women out in the community that remain in the dark," she said.

"Each province people are fighting hard for services and we are working hard to coordinate together to address the issue and revive some of these referral pathways."

Since touching down in Canberra on Sunday the pair has met with Domestic Violence Crisis Service, ACT Policing, The Women's Legal Centre ACT, Rape Crisis Centre and various frontline agencies.

"The most important thing is learning from one another and about the gaps we can identify, things we can try or ideas we can talk about," she said.

"We were really impressed and have learnt a lot from this organisation."

Domestic Violence Crisis Service has specific caseworkers dealing with any issues proceeding to court and offered tips with the Femili PNG staff about tools they could adopt to manage stress high workloads.

Back-to-back meetings have kept them busy but on Thursday the PNG duo nipped down to Melbourne for the day to meet domestic violence campaigner Rosie Batty who is due to visit their country in April.

Ms Biseo said she was astonished that service provision in Australia extended to the care of pets caught up in cases of domestic violence - something that felt worlds away from the focus now in PNG.

While there was a lot of common ground in the talks, Ms Biseo said there areas of stark contrast too.

Her staff struggled to navigate poor referral pathways for victims and had to deal with the interplay between polygamy, sexism and, in rare but often severe cases, accusations of sorcery.

"In Papua New Guinea if we can have our government position strengthened, and as well as other NGOs being proactive we can all work together on the issue," she said. "But right now we are doing our best to make sure the survivors access the services."
