But if Mrs Abbott does ever start manifesting herself at Canberra occasions she'll struggle to leave as favourable an impression as one of her spousal predecessors, Pattie Menzies, did at 1964's St Margaret's November Fair.

More of Pattie Menzies' feat in a moment but first we rejoice that 50 years ago this weekend the boon of Presbyterianism was brought, at last, to the then very new and perhaps still rather pagan northern Canberra suburbs of Watson and Hackett.

Pioneers had begun to live in those suburbs (bleak then, but leafy today) in 1960. But it was only on February 2, 1964, at Watson Primary School, that the first worship service of the new congregation of the still-not-built, still-unnamed Presbyterian church in the Watson and Hackett suburbs was held. It was attended, impressively, by 106 adults and 87 children. And so what was to become St Margaret's Uniting Church was born. St Margaret's was finished in time for it to accommodate its first, and probably Christmassy, service in December 1967.

This weekend St Margaret's, that famous bright-white apparition at the crossroads of Antill Street and Phillip Avenue (its Brian Rope says the church is ''truly blessed, with a central position in the northern suburbs of Canberra'', a blessed site it shares with Holy Cross Anglican Church) will celebrate its 50th anniversary. There is to be a Saturday evening dinner and book launch and then a special worship service on Sunday, at 10.30am.

Everyone, including - and especially - pioneering parishioners of yesteryear now sprinkled far and wide, is welcome to attend Sunday's service and the following morning tea.

While Rope was researching the history of the church someone who was at the church fair in November 1964 (it was the first fete held on the site of the still-to-be-built St Margaret's) reminisced to him that Pattie Menzies, wife of prime minister Robert, did more than just open the event. She went to every stall and bought something at every single one. Very big Christian shoes for Margie Abbott to fill, if ever she shimmers forth into the nation's capital.

And the clergyman standing behind Pattie Menzies in our picture is that ultra-well-known Canberran the Reverend Don Erickson. He and other emeritus clergy of the church will be at this weekend's spiritual shenanigans.

While you work out what on earth this is a photograph of, we report that the melody of the 2013 Centenary of Canberra lingers on.

Children of primary school age took pictures of things that grabbed them during that gripping year. Now, all Canberrans have the chance to make the people's choice from among them. The elite winners (yet to be announced) have been chosen by a distinguished panel that included Chief Minister Katy Gallagher and The Canberra Times photo supremo Karleen Minney.

Meanwhile, entries are on display at the Canberra Glassworks or on screen at the Canberra Museum and Gallery. We have made an eccentric choice of the one to show you here (it is number 24, A Face of Canberra), perhaps because it is so gross and because primary school children have a licence to be gross. They should make the most of it now, while it lasts, for a lifetime of having to be seemly awaits them.
