The city was well below the state average for robberies, stealing from a dwelling, stealing from a retail store, and stealing from a person last year, statistics released by the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics yesterday show.
Domestic violence was the only crime type more common in Queanbeyan than the rest of the state.
Canberra's cross-border neighbours recorded below-average rates of non-domestic assaults, sexual assaults and indecent assaults.
Bureau director Don Weatherburn said the city's crime rates were less than half the state average in most cases.
''Queanbeyan's crime rates are very low,'' Dr Weatherburn said.
''The only one that's above the state rate is assault domestic violence, and that's only barely above the state rate.
''It is one good place to live.''
Dr Weatherburn said cities with low criminal activity were commonly areas of high economic growth and financial stability.
''Normally you find low crime rates in areas where you've got a booming economy, low levels of unemployment, jobs for young people when they come out of school, good transport, decent recreation,'' he said.
