An 82-year-old man is undergoing surgery for serious head injuries after he was attacked outside his home in Pearce on Monday night, police say.

The man heard noises outside his home on Pethebridge Street about 10.30pm and went to investigate.
Police said an altercation took place with a 21-year-old man and the elderly man sustained serious head and facial injuries.
He was admitted to Canberra Hospital, where he will undergo surgery.
The offender is described as having an average build, 5'10" (178cm) tall, wearing grey tracksuit pants.
A 21-year-old Torrens man is assisting police with their investigation, which is ongoing.
