Tuggeranong Patrol officers, forensic investigators and the Australian Federal Police bomb response team attended an area near a waterway and bike path between Lanyon High School and St Clare of Assisi Primary School about 2pm.
No one was injured and neither school was evacuated following the minor explosion, which caused damage to plants and grass and dispersed some material around the area.
ACT Policing Superintendent Paul Shakeshaft said ‘‘it was fortunate no one was hurt during the incident, which occurred while both schools were still in session’’.
Superintendent Shakeshaft said the unusual incident had the potential to be very dangerous for anyone venturing into the area.
