Lawyers for a man who allegedly raped and assaulted his wife have accused the woman of making up the allegations to secure an Australian visa.

But the Chinese woman has maintained her allegations are true, and told a court she was scared of her husband, who was "angry all the time".
The husband, who cannot be named, went on trial in the ACT Supreme Court on Monday, facing eight charges, including sexual intercourse without consent, assault, and acts of indecency.
It is alleged he and his wife had a dispute about dinner at their Canberra home in April last year.
The argument became physical, and the accused began to throw things at her in their bedroom, the prosecution says.
The husband allegedly began removing her clothes and she tried to push him away, saying "don't touch me".
He is then accused of raping her, while she pleaded with him to stop, Crown prosecutor Joel Hiscox said.
"But the accused didn't stop and he physically dominated her," Mr Hiscox told the jury on Monday.
He is alleged to have pushed her back onto the bed as she tried to get up, biting her bottom, choking her, and spitting in her face during the ordeal.
When he left the room, he allegedly took her mobile, but she used his phone to text a friend in Mandarin, translating roughly to "Please call the domestic violence, please help me".
The police were called, arriving at her house on the same night.
But defence barrister Paul Edmonds has alleged the woman invented the story to get a special visa that allowed her to remain in Australia.
The court heard she was waiting on a spousal visa, but wanted to leave her husband.
Her migration agent told her that if she told the Department of Immigration about domestic violence, she could get a special visa.
Mr Edmonds, in cross-examination of the woman on Tuesday, alleged she had become concerned she was not going to get her spousal visa after a year of waiting.
The woman denied that, saying she had always been told the application would take about two years.
When asked if she had lied about the allegations to obtain a visa, she responded through an interpreter: "Definitely not."
Mr Edmonds also alleged she had only married the man to get the spousal visa.
She responded: "It's impossible. It's unreasonable because if I wanted a spousal visa I can marry anyone. I don't have to marry him."
The trial continues before Chief Justice Helen Murrell on Wednesday.
